Wellness Program

Wellness: The state of being healthy and disease-free

At Pacific Crest Equine, we strive to do the very best for our equine patients. The most effective way for our veterinarians to achieve this is to work with you, the horse-owner, to implement a pro-active approach to health and wellness. The goal is to recognize MINOR problems BEFORE they become MAJOR problems by addressing the needs of your horses in a timely manner. Our doctors focus on EDUCATION: The more time we spend with you and your horse, the better our chances of avoiding problems, and the greater our chance of successful treatment when problems do arise.

We have four separate programs tailored to fit the needs of your horse as an individual. Stop worrying about ordering your own vaccines, who to call for a dental, and what kind of dewormer you should use. Let the licensed veterinarians and friendly staff at Pacific Crest Equine take care of your horse’s needs in 2010. It’s what we do!

Our wellness programs are designed to meet the needs of your horse for a one-year period. Your horse’s first wellness visit will be scheduled between January 1 and June 30, 2010. All wellness programs must be requested and paid for within those dates. Please call ahead for availability and to schedule your appointment. We will work with you to schedule the additional visits for the SILVER and GOLD programs at regular intervals.

Wellness programs are nonrefundable, nontransferable, and included items cannot be omitted for discount or substituted.

We strongly recommend that you bring your horse to the hospital for wellness visits for the safest, most controlled environment and for x-rays (if applicable). BRONZE, SILVER, and GERIATRIC visits can be scheduled at your farm for no additional cost to you on our pre-scheduled PCE Field Services days.

Please take a moment to decide which program would be best for you and your horse. From the pasture pet to the highest-level performance horse, every animal has needs to keep them healthy and happy. Consider your horse’s activity level and your expectations, then chose from one of the following four options:

BRONZE: Basic adult horse program. $290

This is a general-health option designed for the quiet companion horse, horses at a low level of work and/or for the horse owner on a budget. The program will be completed in one visit to address the most important health concerns for the year. A veterinarian will speak with you, examine the animal and make specific recommendations based on your and horse’s needs. You will also enjoy the benefit of one discounted emergency-service fee if the enrolled horse has an emergency within one year after enrollment.

SILVER: Pleasure horse program. $490

This is a more comprehensive option for horses that work on a regular basis, that are in close proximity to other horses (such as a boarding stable situation), that travel, and/or for the horse-owner who simply wants a higher level of care for their animals. The major benefit compared with the BRONZE is that a veterinarian will examine the SILVER horse TWICE yearly. The second visit affords an important follow-up for any problems that were noted during the first visit, as well as an opportunity to detect any new health concerns earlier. The second visit is also a perfect time to re-asses the parasite prevention program by repeating a fecal exam. The addition of a flu/rhino vaccine offers additional protection for horses that have exposure to other horses due to travel or stabling. With SILVER, you now have the hoof radiograph option to address concerns about hoof balance and shoeing.

GOLD: Performance horse program. $890

This is the gold-standard option for horses that compete on a regular basis, and for the horse-owner who insists on the very best for their animals. This is also a great option for horses with lameness problems that will need comprehensive follow-up throughout the year. In addition to a regular physical exam THREE times in the year, each exam will include a comprehensive musculoskeletal evaluation. All three GOLD visits will be performed at our hospital, so that your horse can be examined on varied footing and to benefit from our controlled environment. A Complete Blood Count and Chemistry panel (link) will serve a general assessment of overall health. We will assess any potential saddle-fit concerns using thermography. Foot radiographs (link) are a standard part of GOLD. A Coggins test and one standard health certificate are also included to acommodate the traveling athelete.

Since the GOLD horse will be seen THREE times, you will get the highest level of continuous care and follow-up from our doctors. During each visit, concerns, treatments and problems from previous visit(s) will be discussed. Our goal is to keep your horse competing at the highest possible level.

GERIATRIC: Aimed at meeting the special needs of your aging horse. Only for horses 18 years or older. $390

In recent years, the horse population has aged and the number of people willing to provide necessary care to their aging equine companions has increased. More of our clients are opting to diagnose and treat problems encountered by their older horses, as opposed to euthanizing them for relatively treatable problems. We understand that a geriatric horse can present a financial burden to its owner, especially when problems arise. PCE designed the Geriatric Wellness option to give our clients a means to care for their older horses in a cost-effective manner, and to hopefully increase the number of years their aging horse can live comfortably.
